GILLES RETSIN
Born Belgium
Lives and works in London
Retsin is the principal of his eponymous studio, as well as the Co-Founder of Automated Architecture (AUAR). He is an architect and thought leader, driven by the desire to completely rewire the way we build and design, so that we can again deliver beautiful spaces in large quantities: architecture for the many. With AUAR, he is currently working on his most ambitious project yet. ‘We’re on a mission to build a global ecosystem of automated micro-factories to deliver sustainable, affordable and beautiful architecture to millions of people.’
Retsin is known for his innovative design work and thinking, disrupting the way in which we design, build, and inhabit our environment. His work lies at the intersection of design and technology, with a specific interest in AI & creativity, automation, and robotics. He is deeply committed to addressing pressing social and environmental issues, and he believes automation can play a key-role.
Retsin’s work has been internationally recognised through exhibitions at institutions such as the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the Royal Academy, The Centre Pompidou and The Vitra Design Museum, and talks at universities such as MIT, Stanford and ETH. He is an Associate Professor at UCL, the Bartlett School of Architecture, where he co-directs AUAR Labs. He studied, lived and worked in Belgium, Chile, Germany, Switzerland, Hong Kong and the UK and obtained a PhD from RMIT in Australia.
He writes and speaks about design, automation, architecture, AI and creativity, as well as construction tech.
